My favourite stories were The Negro of Peter the Great - a historical tale based on the story of Pushkin's own Ethiopian great-grandfather, Dubrovsky - the adventures of a nobleman who loses his property in an unjust lawsuit and becomes a bandit, and The Queen of Spades - the famous story of a young gambler who becomes obsessed with the idea that an old lady has mystical powers that could win him a fortune. Hermann soon obtains the old lady's secret but there is of course a terrible catch in it and I have to admire Pushkin for his ingenuity in dreaming up such a dramatic end to his story.
